This guide provides information on how to find existing organisations in myWorksites, and how to create new organisations

Finding existing organisations before creating new ones

When searching for an organisation (i.e. during the worksite application process), the system may not display the organisation you're looking for if the wrong Type of client filter is selected.

Understanding organisation type filters

The Type of client field includes checkboxes for different organisation categories:​

  • Utility

  • Organisation or Private Individual

  • Government Agency

Selecting a type filters the search results to only show organisations matching that classification. If the organisation you're searching for belongs to a different type than what's currently selected, it won't appear in the dropdown results.​

The screenshot below shows 'Utility' is selected, and no results returned.

The screenshot below shows 'Organisation or Private Individual' selected, and the expected results are returned for the organisations already in the system.


Common Issue: "Organisation Already Exists" Error

When you can't find an organisation in the search results and attempt to create a new one using the "Add New Organisation" form, you may receive an error. This occurs when an organisation with the same NZBN already exists in the system.​

The organisation creation process validates against NZBN records from the MBIE NZBN register, but does not validate if the same organisation (either with the same name, or different name, or same NZBN) is already in myWorksites.

If the NZBN is already registered, the system prevents duplicate entries.​​

The screenshot below shows that you will be able to find an organisation and attempt to create it, but if it already exists, the error will display.

If you're certain the organisation doesn't already exist in myWorksites, or the organisation has changed names in the Companies Register, and you still can't create the new Organisation, reach out to our support team via the in-app help tool.


Solution: Check organisation type before creating

Before attempting to create a new organisation, ensure you've selected the correct Type of client filter:​

  1. In the Worksite Client and Project section, review the Type of client checkboxes​

  2. Try different type combinations (e.g., switch from "Organisation or Private Individual" to "Utility")​

  3. Search again for the organisation name​

  4. If the organisation appears in the dropdown after changing the type filter, select it from the list​

Only create a new organisation if you've confirmed it doesn't exist under any organisation type.

The system sources business data from the NZBN register maintained by the Companies Office.
