The complexity score is an automatic ranking which helps RCAs identify complex worksites. It allows consenting teams to better apply their resources to where they are needed most. The complexity score can alert managers or stakeholders when complex, high risk or disruptive work on the road is being proposed.

Benefits of the Complexity Score

The Complexity Score combines data and process to improve efficiency, consistency and effectiveness. Key benefits include:

  • Standardised method for determining the likely complexity of CARs.

  • Creates efficiency by automatic and proactive calculation surfaced directly in the processing queue.

  • Adaptive with configurable weightings which allow RCAs to tune the ranking for their specific road network.

What the Complexity Score is and how it works

The Complexity Score is a number calculated for every Worksite. The calculator runs automatically in the background each time an edit is made to a Worksite.

The calculation uses individual factors of a Worksite, and generates a weighted score for each factor. The resultant Complexity Score is the final combined score of all the individual factor scores.

The Complexity Score uses the following factors in the calculation:

  • The location of the works and impacts

  • The duration of the works and impacts

  • The classification of the road (how many vehicles typically use the road)

  • The level of impact to primary road users (such as a full road closure vs small delay)

  • Impact to public transport, heavy haulage routes or emergency responders

Factors can be derived from data relating to the Worksite (e.g. duration, categories, types etc) or from associated external data sources which the Worksite may impact (e.g. public transport etc).

Using the Complexity Score

The higher the score is, the more likely that a CAR and TMP application will be more complicated and require greater processing time.

The score is intended to be used by RCAs to help prioritise and escalate complex worksites. The complexity score is built into the Processing Queue (RCAs only) and is also available via Worksite Search.
