What is a Review?

A Review is a collaborative process in myWorksites that allows Road Controlling Authorities (RCAs), the project team (applicant), as well as other stakeholders to work together on complex or high-impact work projects well before the actual work begins.
The review process is ideally undertaken months before an application is submitted to the RCA. But can also be commenced upon application of a Worksite.

Rather than managing complex projects "just in time" through the standard permit application process, Reviews enable early collaboration - months before works start. This extended timeframe prior to approval creates space for thorough planning, coordination, and innovation that leads to better outcomes for everyone involved.

More details about the Review workflow will be available soon.

How Reviews Work

Initiation: RCA staff may “Request a review” on large-scale or complex projects once they become aware of these. Either when applicants notify the Works Coordination Team at Auckland Transport about their intentions (see here for a process description). Or when the Worksite application is submitted via myWorksites.

Collaborative Planning: Multiple RCA teams, the project team (potentially including project managers, clients, contractors, utility companies), and other stakeholders work together to identify risks, record requirements, coordinate activities, and agree to or develop optimised delivery solutions.

Keep in mind that effective collaboration will likely require some time from all parties - the earlier the review is commencing, the better the outcome for the applicant.

Streamlined Approvals: Individual Work Activity Permits (WAPs) associated with a reviewed Worksite or reviewed Project may be processed at a faster rate, as the RCA has already been sufficiently involved in the design and planning for these works, reducing administrative workload.

Better Coordination: Important project details and decisions are captured within the system, maintaining visibility and context throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Benefits

For Road Controlling Authorities

  • Better visibility of priority work coming up on the network

  • Improved coordination between different teams

  • Early agreement on access rules and compliance requirements

  • Shift workload timing from last-minute pressure to proactive planning

For Contractors and Utility Companies

  • Reduced uncertainty through early agreement on project parameters

  • Potential for streamlined approvals on individual work permits

  • Better collaboration with RCAs and other stakeholders

  • Reduced conflicts between different work programs

For the Network and Community

  • Minimised disruption through better coordination of disruptive activities in the road corridor

  • Mitigation of impacts through collaboration of stakeholders

  • More efficient use of available road space

When to Use Reviews

Reviews are particularly valuable for:

  • High-impact projects that significantly affect traffic or network operations

  • Complex work requiring coordination between multiple parties

  • Large-scale infrastructure projects with extended timeframes

  • Projects in sensitive locations where disruption must be carefully managed

  • Work requiring innovative solutions or non-standard approaches

The specific criteria and thresholds for when Reviews are required or recommended are determined by the RCA based on their network priorities and operational needs.

Current Availability

Reviews can currently be requested by some staff at Auckland Transport for Worksites within the Auckland area. The feature is being expanded with additional functionality over the coming weeks and months.
